India’s Central Government has launched several health insurance schemes aimed at offering affordable and accessible healthcare to specific sections of the population — including the poor, senior citizens, employees, and vulnerable groups. These schemes are fully or partially funded by the government and are implemented nationwide, often in partnership with public and private insurers.
Some of the major central schemes include:
Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY): The world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme, offering ₹5 lakh coverage per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization to over 50 crore beneficiaries.
Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS): Designed for central government employees, pensioners, and their families, covering a wide range of medical treatments across CGHS empanelled hospitals and wellness centers.
Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESI): A social security scheme for workers earning less than ₹21,000/month in the organized sector, providing medical care and cash benefits during health-related absences.
Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN): Offers financial assistance to poor patients suffering from life-threatening diseases and needing treatment at government hospitals.
Jan Aushadhi Scheme: While not an insurance plan, it supports access to affordable medicines, thus reducing out-of-pocket health expenditures.
