Types of State Government Health Insurance Schemes in India

Alongside central initiatives, state governments in India have launched their own health insurance schemes to address regional healthcare needs and expand coverage to underserved populations. These schemes often complement or build upon central policies and are tailored to the demographic and economic realities of each state.

Many state schemes offer cashless hospitalization, maternity care, critical illness coverage, and even post-hospitalization support for economically weaker sections, farmers, senior citizens, and unorganized workers.

Key examples include:

  • Aarogyasri (Telangana & Andhra Pradesh): Offers financial protection for catastrophic health needs of BPL families, covering major surgeries and treatments in empanelled hospitals.
  • Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (Maharashtra): Covers low-income families for surgeries and therapies, especially in the areas of oncology, cardiology, and renal treatments.
  • Karunya Health Scheme (Kerala): Provides financial assistance for major illnesses such as cancer, kidney and heart diseases to BPL families.
  • Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (Odisha): Offers ₹5 lakh (₹10 lakh for women) annual coverage per family, for treatments at empanelled public and private hospitals.
  • Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (Tamil Nadu): Aims to provide quality medical and surgical treatment to low-income families through government and private hospitals.
  • Mukhyamantri Amrutum (MA) Yojana (Gujarat): Mukhyamantri Amrutam Yojana was initiated by the Gujarat government in the year 2012 to provide quality medical and surgical care for major illnesses to poor people living in the state. People belonging to lower-income groups and living below the poverty line are eligible to enrol in this scheme. The MA Yojana provides family floater health insurance coverage of up to ₹3 lakh per annum.

Each state may have a unique eligibility criterion, enrolment method, and coverage list — but the goal remains the same: to ensure healthcare access is not limited by income or geography.
